“Blind Date addresses the question of translating disembodied virtual play into offline embodied action in physical social space. In the video, a fictional online chat is dramatically interpreted by two performers (played by myself and Norwegian artist Trygve Luktvasslimo). The dialogue is a sexually explicit exchange between an online user claiming to be a policeman and another claiming
to be a social worker. The script and performances draw heavily on pop cultural references - from porno films to film noir and classical Hollywood - and comment on the possibilities of literary play and character-based fantasy in the construction of virtual identities. The dialogue unfolds according to the real time pacing of the online chat, with the actors' interaction preserving the gaps in communication and
interruption between the two writers' responses that characterize an instant messenger exchange, lending the performance an uncanny and absurd, often humorous, effect. The formal exercise exposes the real-time slippages and propensities for identity-based role-play that are afforded in the online communication, while reaffirming the social and cultural codes and manners that characterize a face-to-face conversation.
Ultimately, Blind Date questions how the development of polymorphous online identities psychologically refigure the subject when "it" goes offline, out of the flickering screen and into physical social space? How does interactive online behavior translate into "real life" where materiality and (re)embodiment shift the political and cultural rules, stakes, and conditions of simulation?”
